Gaia Ajax Widgets - Spartacus Relase
The Spartacus Release of Gaia Ajax Widgets is a Feature Pack for the Q3 - 2007 Release meaning
those that have bought the Q3 will get this Release for Free.
Spartacus according to Roman historians was a
gladiator-slave who became a Freedom Fighter for slaves in the Roman Empire. We have named this release
after him to symbolize the importance of keeping the web a standardized, open and free medium.
We have a lot of new features in this release, some of the highlights are mentioned here;
-
Lots of new features and bugfixes for Gaia Window
-
Two new skins called; "light_blue" and "ivory_white" (the theme of this page)
-

So as you can see we've been really busy bees... ;)
About Gaia and our Open Source license
A lot of people are still confused about the Open Source license of Gaia Ajax Widgets. To make a long story
short; Unless you develop Open Source software yourself you CANNOT use our GPL version! (more or less)
For a way more detailed explanation read Thomas Hansen's blog about how
GPL affects your use of Gaia. But
basically unless you develop Open Source Software yourself or in any other ways can meet the GPL restrictions you're
not entitled to use our GPL version. Gaia is FREE as in Freedom, NOT as in Free Beer!
If you need a Free as in Free Beer Ajax Framework you must choose a Framework which is MIT, BSD etc licensed like
for instance script.aculous.us or Anthem.NET.
Gaia is NOT Free as in Free Beer! Gaiaware the company behind Gaia is dependant upon YOU to pay US license fees
for us to be able to keep enhancing and developing Gaia Ajax Widgets. To use our GPL version in a closed source application
that does not meet the restrictions of GPL is effectively stealing and basically means that YOU will get a worse product
due to us not being able to keep on developing Gaia Ajax Widgets with the momentum and speed that YOUR problems deserves!
If you want to use Gaia Ajax Widgets in a Closed Source Project you can check our main website
for purchasing options. If you think the price is too steep and you think you have other things you can contribute with instead of
"cold cash" then we are open to suggestions about alternative payment methods. We constantly need people to write tutorials, blog
about Gaia, help us track down bugs etc.
Company news
Eirik Chambe-Eng one of the CEOs and Founder of Trolltech has said yes to a position in
our board. In addition we're in the process of re-arranging the rest of our board towards a more professional and
business oriented direction. This means that Gaiaware will be more professionalized and that we're as of from now
a much more mature company with a complete administration in addition to us hackers...
We have also gotten a professional investor which means that the speed of the project and the force of the development behind
the library will be way higher and have a lot more momentum than earlier. (even compared to the enormous speed we've kept so far)
We have also decided to have all major releases happening on 15th of February, 15th of May, 15th of August and 15th of November.
This means that you will know when we release a new Major Release and will be able to do more planning regarding upgrades and
such for your own projects. We will come out with a detailed roadmap later this autumn which at least to some extend will
show you the next couple of releases and what you may expect of features in those. Feature packs will still be released
on "random basis" accordiong to what we feel is right and when we feel it is needed.
