Gaia Runs on Linux

27. Apr 2007

I know that saying the "L-word" in a blog dedicated to an ASP.NET Ajax framework might, and probably will, upset some people. Anyway, we said the "G-word" before that, and we are still alive (at least to the time of writing this blog). And in fact since we went GPL we all have a great level of energy and we really feel liberated.

Gaia Running on Linux

We took it upon ourselves that our next step should be 100% support for Mono. And we would really like to see Web Application running on a stack that we internally like to call the GLAM (Gaia, Linux, Apache and Mono). That does not mean in any way, that we don't want people to run Web Applications that use Gaia on IIS and Windows Servers. And certainly does not mean that we will just focus on supporting Mono and have no future support for Microsoft's ASP.NET. But it just means that we believe in choice and we would like you to have the right to choose which environment you want to run your applications on.

And I must tell you, the results that we have so far for running Gaia on Mono, are absolutely fascinating. We are keeping a page on our website dedicated to our support for Mono and we will keep it updated with the latest results of our testing on Mono and Linux. Please, try to check it out frequently if you are interested in running Gaia on Mono.

We are keeping a close dialog with the Mono team. And they are excited about this, and we will keep working together to make sure that Gaia runs perfectly on both Microsoft's ASP.NET and Mono. We would like to hear your opinion on this, please feel free to leave comments to this post or use our forums to let us know what you think.

It would kick ass for both Gaia and Mono if they'd be 100% compatible and frequently used in the future. It would change everyones attitude towards ASP.NET as well. ASP.NET would feel as platform independent as ANSI c++. Not like Java, which has heavy dependency on large and slow application servers and requires too much of download for making a hello world sample run.

Now who can resist a bit of of GLAM :) Good name.

Thomas, this seems like a *fantastic* step, congratulations!

The more I develop applications on both Windows and Linux, the more I want my dev favourite tools to be cross platform so I can use them on as many projects as possible :).

Pushing Gaia in this direction feels like the right thing to do IMHO, hope you can get it 100%
