Today Gaia Became Open Source
24. Apr 2007
As a developer, the fact that any software is Open Source is very exciting to me, especially if this software is targeting developers, like our Ajax Widgets library. But what's more exciting to me, even more exciting than the openness of the source, or the freedom to use it and modify it as you please, is the social machines that grow around such projects.
As geeks, probably most of us are lonely social rejects, and I bet that a good percentage even enjoy that fact. Despite that, as human beings we still feel the instinctive need to live with each other. That's why we build our houses close to each other, feel safer when we are among others than we do when we are alone. That's why we have different interests, different jobs, different skills, speak different languages, have different cultural backgrounds. All this, so that we can cater to each other's needs, depend on each other in things that we simply can't achieve as individuals and share our unique knowledge resulting from our unique experiences.
A few days ago I read something very remarkable; it states that social networking websites like facebook.com and myspace.com are very close to becoming the most popular websites on the web. Replacing that spot which was occupied by pornographic websites for so long.
I think if we can take any lesson from all this, it should be that together we can produce greater results and an even more important lesson is that we really like to collaborate with each other, whether we realize that or not. It's simply our nature.
That's why I am so excited to see the open source community embrace Gaia. And see Gaia grow even beyond our own imagination and expectations. And most of all, I am very excited to see you collaborate with us, so we can leave our mark together on planet Gaia.
