Congratulations to Jackson Harper and Grurrah.com - Winner of the Gaia Programming Contest

28. Apr 2008

Some few months ago we announced the Gaia Programming Contest where the object was to create a GPL software system/portal that would be useful in regards to the big questions for the next 100 years.

Jackson Harper wins Gaia Programming Contest

Keywords for this contest was democracy, environment, collaboration, sharing, Open Source, communication and so on. Jackson Harper delivered a stunningly cool idea which can be thought of like a "Global Idea Brainstormer". Jackson have installed this application himself at the website Grurrah.com where he is using it to track ideas about activities that can help the environment in some beneficial direction. This website will be maintained and updated by Jackson and hopefully many more (I'm eager to start submitting ideas myself) with activities individuals can do to help save the environment.

Jackson has been really creative and in fact the name of the application itself is no exception to his creative thinking. A "Grurrah" is an activity a person can do himself to help reduce the load on the environment. To quote Grurrah.com; "It could be as simple as turning off the lights or as complex as installing solar panels".

Jackson scores big time on creativity, being original, thinking about sharing from a fundamental perspective, having user submissions and interacting with other important arenas where visibility is important etc. I am proud to announce Jackson Harper as the winner of the Gaia Programming Contest. And I am really glad that such a worthy idea and implementation was to get the 10,000 EUROs we are giving away for this contest.

Grurrah is Open Source and all though built in .Net runs 100% on a pure FOSS stack with MySQL, Linux, Mono and Gaia. Which means everyone can use it as their own type of brainstormer all though Grurrah is purely for ENVIRONMENT activities. So if you have great ideas about what other can do or you want to have ideas about what you can do yourself to help the environment I encourage you to visit Grurrah :)

I know it has moved me in regards to what I myself am doing in my day to day life and in fact due to reading some of the Grurrahs available I've been changing several of my own habits like turning of the lights when I leave a room etc.

Well, I am sorry, we did everything possible in our hands to spread the word, blgging, contacted news providers, press releases and everything :( Too many thought of it as "too commercial" to cover unfortunately :(
